These are songs written by members of the church.
It’s so good to be sons and daughters
- John wrote this song for the 21st birthday of the Church in Binley Woods, and it is appropriate for any church giving thanks for itself and remembering its journey.
- O Lord, this time now is ending
- This song reflects Psalm 88 and 1 Peter 1:3-5
- Jill wrote this song as part of a pastoral essay considering the Christian response to dementia, which in 1992 was very sketchy; thankfully much has been published and put into practice since.
- The first verse is for dementia sufferers who face awful loss, as in Psalm 88; the second verse, for those who watch and care, reflects 1 Peter 1:3-5.
- Since 1992 people facing all sorts of other losses have found this song helpful.
- You will rise up on wings
- This song is based on Isaiah 40:28, 31
- Jill was inspired to write this song when she was looking out of her upstairs room window in her house in inner-city Leeds, and saw the seagulls rising up on their wings, thoroughly enjoying themselves. But the Bible does not mention seagulls, so the song had eagles...
- When we set out
- This song addressed a situation where conventional success had not been overwhelmingly evident, though God had clearly been working over 15 years, and seemed to be saying that more was to come... I hope that the song can encourage others on a similar situation.
- ... Having written this song about a local situation, I led an all-age service on Pentecost Sunday, and I discovered that this song could also be used as a meditation on the condition of the disciples before they received the Holy Spirit, wondering whether their earlier hope could be fulfilled.
- ... And then leading a service which considered the deliverance of the Hebrews from Egypt, I discovered that this song could also be used as a meditation on their condition, struggling through the desert.
- Thank you, Lord, that I’m forgiven
- This song is based on Romans 3:24, 7:25, 8:2
- Christmas is fun time
- I wrote this song for the Junior Choir at our church at the time. I wrote it as a kind of antidote to some rather sugary Christmas songs that children’s choirs were singing at the time, and I hope it comes across as enjoyable and that the invitation comes naturally in the song.
- I play guitar in a worship band
- I play the keyboard in our small music group. When there is a pause in the practice, guitarists like to break into a rock and roll riff, and so I wrote a song to go with the riff.
